‘Hi all, the annual Huon River trip is on November 24, something different this year! The plan is to depart the Franklin Boat Ramp at 10 am and transit the Egg Island Canal and travel south approx. 1 NM to the site of the wrecks of the Skipjack and Torana. There is no public road access to the foreshore or the Island south of the canal, so it is quiet and unspoilt and similar scenery to the rivers of Port Davey!
The plan then is to return to The Wooden Boat Centre for a BYO BBQ and tour of the Centre starting at 12.30 ( a $12 donation would be appreciated please).
Boats can return via the canal or take the longer scenic route north and through the gap in the Island. The return trip via the Canal is 2 NM and the trip through the Canal and return via the gap in 4 NM. so its a shorter trip suitable for paddlers and those of us that are a year older this year! Note. The previous Franklin to Huonville return trip was 8.6 NM.
The tide prediction is reasonable, and the Canal is OK for small runabouts although there is a tree branch in the water about halfway through to lookout for. For anyone transiting the gap, stick to the middle of the river and the gap as there is a submerged tree closer to the shore!
