Nothing to do with Captain Ahab, Moby Dick, ‘they call me Ishmael’ and all that, but rather Heard Island with the largest mountain in Australian Territory, snow covered and looming out of the ocean. This is the story of an expedition which went there by yacht with a team intent on climbing that mountain (‘Big Ben’). They were a tough mob, with the boat skippered by Bill Tillman – enough said. We liked the story of the medical officer who ‘at Mawson Station in Antarctica in 1962, had saved the life of a man by performing brain surgery, using modified dental tools, after practicing on a seal.’
Come after 6pm with a plate and $5 for a 6.30pm showtime. Bar will be open.
