Planning the Bruny Island leg

Preparations for the raid are now cracking along. The organising committee are getting around all the camp sites and anchorages for checks, inspecting all the beaches and boat ramps and jetties that we might use, and contacting all the land owners and authorities to update them on our plans.
In 2015 we will be spending four consecutive nights on Bruny Island and that presents the logistics crew with a few new problems while it simplifies a few others. There won’t be two ferry crossings, but it will mean carrying extra equipment and provisions. While on Bruny we plan to do a little bit of land based exploration. Islanders refer to the D’Entrecasteaux Channel side of the island as ‘the inside’ and the wild oceanic coast as ‘the outside’. So that out interstate visitors get to see ‘the outside’ there will be an opportunity to do a tour to the lighthouse (yes, you can climb to the top) and have a swim at Cloudy Bay Lagoon followed by a visit to a vineyard, and a separate tour to Adventure Bay and the Bligh Museum. Also in prospect but not yet confirmed is the opportunity to visit Murrayfield, the working sheep farm operated by the Indigenous Land Corporation. There will be a small additional charge to cover the mini-bus and guide costs for these tours. More information will be provided later. Bruny Island locals including poets, artists and musicians will be joining us for our evening at Alonnah. This will be the mid point of the raid and that has always been something of a party night. However, our experience tells us that everyone will want an early bed so the entertainment runs though dinner, starting at 6pm and finishing around 9pm. |
