Some thoughts on anchors

In the past we’ve found that some very experienced small boat sailors have never needed to anchor their boats until they come on the Raid – not surprising if their boats are used for day sailing and normally are recovered on to the trailer after each day on the water. During the Raid the fleet will over-night at a range of different sites and we must plan for less than perfect wind and wave conditions. At some sites it may be possible to carry the lighter Raid boats above the high water mark, but this won’t be possible at all sites, so all boats must carry suitable anchors. Most experienced Raiders will carry two complete sets of anchors each fitted with a good length of chain and plenty of rope. Remember that the weight of the chain is as important as the anchor in ensuring good holding – so don’t scrimp on chain. The second anchor may be slightly lighter and, depending on conditions, may be used as a stern anchor to reduce swinging in a crowded anchorage or deployed as a second anchor off the bows. If you don’t carry a second anchor you should at least have a long rope that can be used to tie off ashore if needed. Make sure your anchors are securely stowed when you are in transit so that they don’t shift and either unbalance or damage your boat. Consider packing with softer material such as an old insulated drinks bags or similar. We are a large fleet and everyone will sleep better knowing that all boats are securely anchored. |
