  • The view from ‘Imagine’: Quarantine Bay to South ArmWe were an all female crew with Celia as skipper. We set out for Dennes Point, and to our surprise the sea was calm, the sun came out and there was no rain. We came out of Quarantine Bay into the D’Entrecasteaux Channel and into the path of three playful dolphins. We stayed in the lee of the land and had lunch aboard in some quiet water. We set off not knowing what to expect but having been warned that there was unsettled weather expected. We rowed, the waves got bigger, the wind got stronger, the white horses grew in number. The cox changed and we started surfing down the waves and steering towards the coast. The waves got …

  • The view from the camp: Simpson’s Point to Quarantine BayThe camp support staff had the best view of the Simpson’s Point camp, motoring in and out over the ridge: it was spectacular. In the morning after a 7.30 breakfast the now established routine of washing up and packing up the vehicles was easily accomplished with the assistance of everybody in camp. The analogy of ants moving a grasshopper was mentioned. Ros headed out to replenish stores, chef and cooking assistants went off to preprepare meals for the day, the support group went looking for fuel and gas, whilst the setup group found their way to the new camp with a truckload of luggage, camp equipment, mobile toilets and water supplies.   • The view for Seastar: Randall’s Bay to Simpson’s PointSeastar had been tucked away in Egg and Bacon Bay for the night, a millpond in south westerly weather, very close to Randall’s, most importantly within walking distance for dinner. In the morning we motored around for breakfast in 20 minutes. Got away before the rest of the fleet, giving us a brief feeling of superiority before we were passed by the Bay Raiders and the Core Sounds. It was a day of fair winds blowing us along at about five knots, despite leaving two reefs in. We passed Huon Island and then Arch Rock, covered in nesting gulls and resting cormorants, turned the corner at Gordon into the D’entrecasteaux Channel proper and headed directly for Simpson’s …

  • The view from Black Pearl: Dover to Randall’s BayAs with the day before, a bit of everything. A nice breeze out of harbour, then nothing at all around the corner and wallowing around. A stiff wind came down the river, induced us to put in a couple of reefs, and then lots of tacking backwards and forwards to get past the fish farms. After that a straight run into Randall’s Bay. Got the tent up in the Thomas’s beautiful sheep paddock, and then it bucketed with rain. Drama: we had run out of red wine, but to balance that we had a warming curry for dinner.

  • Tawe Nunnugah: the view from the safety boat (Seal)The most dramatic day was when the fleet was hit by a squall off Southport. The Montagu Whaler capsized in the middle of reefing drills off Southport Jetty – the main sheet jammed at an inopportune moment. People were taken off by driving the inflatable just over the gunwhales to make it easy for them to get in, leaving only the skipper aboard. The anchor had been deployed, but was tangled in other lines, and took some time to retrieve. Eventually ‘the Monty’ was slowly towed into harbour, still full of water. In the meantime Imagine had been caught on a surf beach, and another rescue boat, Flat Calm, had got into difficulties trying to assist them. It needed needed to …

  • The view from Swiftsure – Southport to DoverA very quiet seaward passage out of Southport. Dolphins and albatross along the way. The wind came up, straight out of Dover harbour. Swiftsure decided she did NOT want to go home, and we engaged in a series of tacks backwards and forwards across the entrance, very slowly making our way in. The destination was in sight but the wind was dropping and in the end we reluctantly accepted a tow into the beach. Esperance Yacht Club were great hosts, the providers of a very welcome shower, and the venue for wine and song that evening. Thanks to Matt and Gill for organising. We are learning about Swiftsure as we go.

  • First days: the view from Allecat(Allecat is a 20 foot Core Sound open sail boat)  We arrived in Franklin from Lennox Head in northern NSW after a 3 day drive to go straight to the LBT dinner. Caught up with a lot of people we had met before, helped around the shed and generally just settled in. Judy and I came along with Alex, our 24 year old daughter who did the TN 13.  The trip to Cockle Creek was fun in the rickety old bus made better by the Scallop pies on the way.   • Reef early, reef oftenRecent strong winds in southern Tasmaniaare a timely reminder of the importance of havinga good reefing system on your boat and knowing how to use it.   • Return Raid – major changes to route announcedWe have made major changes to the route for the Return Raid.We will now spend the first night (13 Feb) at South Arm, the second night (14Feb) at Woodbridge and the final night (15 Feb) at Charlotte Cove.  The main reason for the changes are to reduce the passage onthe first day. The organisers of the Australian Wooden Boat Festival prefervessels to remain on site until Monday afternoon making it difficult for us toget an early start and raising the likelihood that we would be facing a longhaul into a sea breeze on the first day out.   • There’s nothing more important than safety, but…..So far we have received 46 responses to our questionnaire ondrink preferences for the Raid and just 5 responses to the questionnaire onboat safety equipment!   • Please bring your Life Jackets and advice on taking a PFD on an airlineEveryoneparticipating in the Raid on a small boat is required to wear an approved lifejacket (PFD). The Living Boat Trust has a few communal PFDs but not enough foreveryone. If you have a life jacket please it along.  If you are flying to Hobart and your lifejacket is the type inflated with a CO2 cylinder you have to declare it to theairline ahead of time. You need to look up their Dangerous Goods pages on theweb and it will tell you what you have to do. You will probably be required to sendthem an email with your flight details and booking reference.   • Help ‘Our Monty’ join the RaidTawe Nunnugah isn’t just a cruise in company, but a shared opportunity for participants to sail and row a variety of small boats in waters which would otherwise be too daunting.  We think that one of the most interesting of those boats is the Montagu Whaler, currently undergoing restoration in the Wooden Boat Centre. Every capital ship in the navies of the British Commonwealth used to carry a whaler for a variety of duties, and they were famously seaworthy and good for both rowing and sailing.   • tn17 drink preferencesNow that the Raid is getting closer it’s time to startthinking of the important details that make the Raid a success – and there’refew things more important than making sure everyone is happy with theoccasional drink as the sun goes down. In the past we’ve provided a limitedchoice and as a consequence many participants have chosen to bring their owndrink supplies.   • Only one week to go to pay your invoice and confirm your place on tn17 Deb and I spent Monday and Tuesday this week scouting sites on Bruny Island and we have some great spots lined up for the tn17 Raid.   • What to expect if you are on the Reserve List for tn17We set a limit on the numbers on the Raid to ensure everyone has asafe and enjoyable experience. We reached that limit on 15 September 2016. Thosewho entered their EOI on or before 15 September are on the Priority List. Ifyou submitted after 15 September you were placed on our Reserve List.  Invoices have been sent to those on the Priority List andthey have been told they must pay by 28 October to confirm participation otherwisethey will forfeit their place. Those that don’t pay by 28 October will beremoved from the Priority List and placed at the end of the queue on theReserve List. We will then be in a position to

The not so good, for those on the Priority List (those who entered an EOI before 15 September), is that you should prepare to break into your piggy banks: we are about to bill you. The even worse news is that invoices will be accompanied by ‘Conditions of Participation’ and ‘Payment Policies’ documents. These things aren’t much fun. Time to register is running out. Registrations for boats afloat close on 17th October and for boats displayed on land,12 December.   • tn17 Raid full – any new applications (EOIs) will go on the Reserve ListResponse to the call for Expressions of Interest to participate in the 2017 tawe nunnugah Raid has been outstanding. We have already reached our limit for number of participants and any new EOIs received from now on will go on a Reserve List.  People who have already entered EOIs are on our Priority List. Theywill soon be sent details on how to pay including timelines. Once we receive fullpayment they will be placed on our Confirmed List. In fairness to all, we cannot exclude other potential participantsby holding places indefinitely – so if we don’t receive payment on time theywill be removed from the Priority List to make room for someone on the Reserve List. We have an article in the next Australian Wooden Boat Festival newsletter and expect it to attract a lot of interest – so get your EOI in now and beat the rush. We have decided to limit  thenumber of people on the Raid to about the size of past Raids so that we can continue to use thelovely hidden camp sites that we have visited previously.   • Communications for Tawe Nunnugah 2017There are a couple of ways to get yourself onto the mailing list:  complete the form at http://bit.ly/23n905x or register your interest in being on the raid at http://bit.ly/23n970L .  Messages are generated automatically from the tawe-nunnugah.org news page, which has a couple of advantages:it isn’t reliant on the memory of the secretary; if emails get lost there is always the news page as a reference.The disadvantage is that email systems such as Gmail tend to classify these messages as ‘promotions’ and stick them under a tab where nobody looks.  See the example in the second screen grab below.  The trick (for Gmail) is to RIGHT click on the item …
